🤔 Is BIM data processing just data analytics in disguise?
24 October 2024🚨 The AI LLM Revolution is Here: Adapt or Get Left Behind
28 October 2024🚀 We are entering the era of BIM Level 3—noBIM. The movement towards structured and granular formats for construction project data is gaining momentum. You'll hear words like hashtag#granular data, hashtag#structured data, mesh, hashtag#dataframes and hashtag#bigdata more and more every day 🤷♂️
Formats containing data on construction projects are interchangeable and complement each other:
🔄 Tekla added an extension for exporting/loading RVT (Revit) files in 2023.
🔄 Graphisoft introduced the ability to load/export RVT (Revit) models as a basic function in ArchiCAD 24 since 2020.
🔄 Nemetschek enabled loading/exporting of RVT (Revit) models in Allplan starting from 2021.
🔄 Bentley offers a solution for direct interaction with RVT through a plugin, bypassing IFC.
🔄 Autodesk has officially used third-party converters since 2018 to export Revit to IFC.
🔄 Autodesk, without realising it, already in 2002, after buying Revit, used third-party converters that cracked the closed DWG format (having discovered this 😵 - Autodesk after a few versions re-shoe Revit in its own RealDWG)
With Revit and other closed CAD (BIM) formats, the same thing happened as with DWG 20 years ago—the formats became accessible to professionals thanks to reverse-engineering SDKs and converters.
🔓 All major hashtag#CAD, hashtag#construction, and design companies working with CAD/MCAD formats pay from €10,000 to €200,000 per year for access to data converters. And no major CAD (BIM) company in the world accesses data from CAD (BIM) programs through APIs or plugins. They all work with specific SDKs or converters. And none of the big companies use the hashtag#IFC format for interoperability (if you need a workshop on this topic - please email me).
As a result, by 2024, we have:
🔄 All formats containing data on construction projects are interchangeable and complement each other: PLN, DB1, RVT, IFC, SVF, DXF, NWC, CPIXML, BLEND, BX3, USD, XLSX & DAE—all of them can contain identical information about the same project.
🗂️ All data from the formats mentioned can be consolidated into one large open structured table, thanks to the aforementioned reverse-engineering SDKs. Each project entity will have MESH geometry (+BoundingBox coordinates) and a set of attribute properties (more details on Kaggle.com "5000 projects IFC&RVT | DataDrivenConstruction.io").
⛽🚀 To work with data, you need to move beyond APIs or plugins that make data handling dependent on specialized skills and tools. Instead, learn to access open data and work with it! Start collecting open structured data today, because soon this data will become the main fuel in company decision-making.
